feeling a bit under the weather. luckily, class was cancelled today. and the foot is still funky so i compromised and went for a walk. there's a couple trails around keene, i took the appel trail from court street to jonathan daniels trail.
*feel free to skip the history lesson, but i thought it was pretty cool* Jonathan Daniels was born in Keene in 1939. He studied at the Episocopal Theological School in Mass and while there decided to head down to Selma, AL with fellow seminary students to walk with Martin Luther King. He decided to spend the semester staying with an African American family in AL and work with the civil rights movement within the Episcopal church. He was arrested in AL for picketing at an all-white store, and upon release the freed protestors went to a local store. outside of the store they were met by an unpaid special deputy who leveled a shotgun at one of the female protestors. Daniels pushed her out of the way and was killed. the death of a white, educated, priest-in-training shocked the Episcopal Church and helped push the church to recognize the racial inequality present in the church. in 1991, Daniels was designated an Episcopal martyr (one of fifteen) and 8/14 (the day of his murder) is designated as the day of remembrance for all the civil rights martyrs. there is also an elementary school in keene named after him.
*end of history lesson* onto a lighter note. the walk was gorgeous. the entire trail is maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile and comes out on the other end at river park along west st.
on my way back home i stopped by kristin's bistro & bakery. it's a really cute little place and there were far too many sweets to choose from. but i decided to aim small (i did spend a lot this weekend on random foods) so bought 2 cookies (and can i just say, the weather has been amazingggggg, in the 80s and so sunny, not sure how long it will last).
the lemon poppyseed cookie was really good. nice lemon flavor and the cookie had a dense buttery texture. the triple chocolate cookie was good as well, but maybe b/c of the cold (or the huge iced dark hot chocolate ytd from burdick's), but it didn't really make me as happy as the lemony cookie. will have to try the bars next time.
