fall foilage hunt

buttermilk falls rd
did a little rdtripping with lisa today. it was a brutal start (i cannot drink and party like a college student anymore, and the spinach and cheddar or whatever bagel from elm city bagel is odd, but their other flavors looked good).

i got to ludlow early so went on a short walk along buttermilk falls rd to buttermilk falls. the trees along the way were amazing) and i felt like more of southern vt was in peak leaf season compared to southern nh.

my foot is bothering me again so the mile walk back to my car was actually no fun. hopefully will get in a visit with podiatrist this week. cross my fingers it's not worst case scenario and they have to amputate my foot since i waited so long to get it checked! haha, i think lisa's extreme worrying has rubbed off on me.

jackson gore, ludlow, vt
our destination for taking pictures was peacham, vt (more on this town later) so we headed out and up vt. we went through woodstock and since we were passing through quechee i finally got to the cabot store there were they literally sample a dozen or so of the cheese flavors. i think the cabot seriously sharp is still my favorite. the garlic and herb one was weird. still don't like horseradish, and their more middle non cheddar flavors like muenster just didn't do it for me (oh, and the "light" cheeses just don't taste the same. go for the real stuff!)

so back to Peacham, it's in the Northeast Kingdom (how they refer to it) of vt. the 2005 sept issue of Yankee magazine (good and fun magazine) designated the town as the "best village in New England" and they weren't kidding about the village part!
peacham is now a town of 732 (2010 census) and i think they are all in hiding b/c all the cars we saw in the village (it was such a small place, town is even pushing it in terms of size) were out of state license plates. it was literally a corner of about 7 buildings that seemed to make up the village. nowhere to eat (or go to the bathroom!) and no sidewalks and all dirt roads (and with all the hills, winter must be brutal). there was a little walking your brochure we grabbed in the antique store but it didn't really have any information worth noting other than what they buildings were and a little history on it (but not the type of historical fun information i wanted). the spitfire grill (1996) was filmed in peacham. i have no idea where the diner would have been located.

so we left peacham and went off on a dirt road until we hit a paved road and ended up in wells river, vt where we found a truck stop (bathroom desperately needed at this point!) and it ended up being P&H Truck Stop. we stepped out of the car and the first thing i noticed was that it smelled like bread, not gasoline. apparently they bake their own bread (wish i had known and thought to buy a loaf!) but we grabbed a late lunch and i got a fig stuffed cookie (meh, wish i had gotten a slice of pie).
we came back to ludlow and passed into mt holly so lisa could show me lake ninevah, which is a gorgeous lake that i wish i had known about last summer. it's not a private lake so anyone can go swim or whatever. the leaves are pretty brilliant but it was getting a bit chilly. this week should be peaking around here. hopefully, the colors will stick around until the fam gets here. i'm pooped, time for bed (and wishing i had gotten some pie!)
